Plot:
EVERYTHING IS GOING TO CHANGE…
When Thomas wakes up in the lift, the only thing he can remember is his first name. He has no recollection of his parents, his home, or how he got where he is. His memory is empty. But he’s not alone. When the lift’s doors open, Thomas finds himself surrounded by kids who welcome him to the Glade, a large expanse enclosed by stone walls.
Just like Thomas, the Gladers don’t know why or how they got to the Glade. All they know is that every morning, for as long as anyone can remember, the stone doors to the maze that surrounds them have opened. Ever night, for just as long, they’ve closed tight. Every thirty days a new boy is delivered in the lift. And no one wants to be stuck in the Maze after dark. The Gladers were expecting Thomas’s arrival. But the next day, a girl is sent up—the first girl ever to arrive in the Glade. And more surprising yet is the message she delivers. The Gladers have always been convinced that if they can solve the maze that surrounds the Glade, they might find their way home…wherever that may be. But it’s looking more and more as if the Maze is unsolvable.
And something about the girl’s arrival is starting to make Thomas feel different. Something is telling him that he might has some answers—if he can only find a way to retrieve the dark secrets locked within his own mind.
Review:
The novel’s title “The Maze Runner” immediately catches my attention. The Maze is a dark and scary place. Nobody’s ever lived through a night outside of the Glade and in the Maze, where Grievers, creatures of the Maze come alive at night. And then there’s the word “Runner”. Obviously it’s someone who’s running (duh!) but is he after something or is he running from something?
The main character, Thomas is easily likable because of his courage and humanity but also because of how easily it is to understand what he’s feeling. Example, when Chuck, one of his only friends in the Glade, ends up talking too much, Thomas easily gets annoyed but mostly keeps his thoughts to himself. I mean, everyone has a friend like that, right? I know how Thomas feels because my younger sister will easily win the chattiest 13 year old award. And unlike some heroes, Thomas shows his fears. He ends up sobbing in a few parts of the book and I can literally feel his dread.
There are also many characters in the book, and they all have different personalities and opinions. Around the middle of the novel, the Keepers of the Glade will have to choose Thomas’s fate because he has broken the most important rule of the Glade (he broke it to save two of the Gladers!). And not all the Keepers have the same opinions. Some wish Thomas be rewarded for his bravery but others wish he be Banished or locked up for up to a month.
Honestly, my favorite character is Newt, hands down! Newt is the second in command inthe Glade. Newt is a born leader; most people respect him and his decisions. He might not be as good as a leader as Alby, the first in command but it’s obvious that Newt is wise and like Thomas, courageous. Although Newt isn’t too fond of being in charge.
What I really enjoyed about this book is that it’s filled with mysteries. The whole story is in the 3rd person but from Thomas’s point of view, and like everyone else at the Glade, he doesn't remember anything from his past life. So when we read it, nobody knows what’s going to happen or what did happen or why they're where they are. There are new twists and turns in each page.
Another thing I like about the book is the character’s dialect. The Gladers seem to have a Southern dialect mixed together with new words like “shank” or “shuck it” and even “Med-jacks”.
The Maze Runner is one of those books you just can’t put down. Just simply amazing.I strongly recommend this book to fans of action and mystery. This dystopia is very dark and at times, a little gore. With an obvious budding romance between Thomas and Teresa, the only girl, who carries an odd message.
Don’t miss its sequel The Scorch Trials! Want to know more about the Maze? Read The Maze Runner’s prequel The Kill Order, recently released! Plus, a film adaptation is going to be released in 2014. And did I mention that the oh so gorgeous Dylan O'Brien is staring in it as Thomas and Kaya Scodelario as Theresa!
