*SPOILERS*
Honestly, I was really looking forward to reading this book but it ended up disappointing me so much. When I read the plot for Matched. I was so excited. I thought that it was going to be a cool science fiction/dystopian book with a twist in romance. I think the Matched world is such a unique concept and that's what really caught my attention but God, I was bored out of my mind while reading it.
Just by saying that, I know I'm going to get a lot of hate with this 'review' since a lot of teens are in love with this book.
Although to me, I thought it was extremely predictable. It was so obvious that in the end, Cassia would chose Ky over her best friend, Xander. In the beginning of the novel, the heroine spent some time with Xander but the moment after Kyle was mentioned, it was like to her, Xander never existed. Throughout the book, Cassia spent 99% of her time with Ky. I get that she would spend a lot of time with her love interest but it didn't seem like much of a love triangle to me.
Personally, my favorite female characters are always the strong, independent ones who can is a bit (okee, maybe a lot) messed up. Someone like Isabelle Lightwood from The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare or Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. But in this case, Cassia Reyes is pretty close to perfect, which I guess is kind of normal in their Society. Nonetheless, she wasn't my kind of girl.
But I'll admit, Cassia was pretty independent but as she grew closer to Ky, I felt like the heroine was turning into a dog and her love interest was also her master. Ky was teaching her all these things from the past, which was great but Cassia never really did anything in return. Normally, a duo should each have their own set of skills. In this case, it was as if Cassia was leaning on Ky the whole time, which I think made her look weak.
Halfway through the novel, I had to force myself to finish it. It took me almost four weeks to finally reach the last page when I usually finish a book after a week and a half at most. I'm glad that I was able to read it until the end but there is no way in the near future am I going to read its sequels.
I think that Matched is just on of those books you either love or hate. And although I don't quite hate it, I just wouldn't bother to suggest it to anyone. And I heard that Disney was going to make a film adaptation of this. Let me tell you that you won't spot me buying tickets to see it. I would much rather wait until the DVD came out and then perhaps out of pure curiosity I would go see it. On one hand, I'm a bit scared for Matched knowing Disney has the rights to the film. Disney has done some incredible work like The Pirates of the Caribbean and The Lone Ranger (which was released earlier this year and I loved) but I just don't want the movie to end up only a bunch of ten year olds would enjoy.
